Welcome to Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church

Welcome, and thank you for visiting Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church online. If you are new to our Church or thinking about worshipping with us, you are most welcome! We would love to get to know you better. Feel free to be in touch with one of our pastors who could help you feel at home here, or get connected, or just have a chat. We hope that this website provides you with a sense for who we are and some of our ministries. We encourage you to join us in worship on a Sunday morning. May God bless you.

OUR church history

Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church (SAMC) was founded in 1949 as a ministry for primarily German speaking immigrants of Anabaptist Mennonite faith. We have worshipped at our current location at Sargent and Garfield in Winnipeg’s West End since 1960. Over the years SAMC has gone through many changes, including transitioning to using English in worship and community life. SAMC has also continued to grow in diversity as we experience and express our faith in a variety of ways. Despite many changes, the important values of community, worship and learning to follow Jesus Christ have always been integral to us. We invite you to broaden our history by joining us in worship and community.

SAMC is a community of people who strive to worship God, follow Christ, and be empowered by the Holy Spirit. We understand and live our Christian faith from an Anabaptist perspective. The Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective is a valuable summary of our beliefs and convictions.

congregational statement

SAMC seeks to grow as a community of grace, joy and peace so that we can be witnesses to God’s love in the world. We invite and welcome all people to join in this vision. As followers of Jesus Christ in the Anabaptist/Mennonite tradition we believe that all people have been created in the image of God.  We trust the Holy Spirit is among us and leading us, as we strive to faithfully follow Jesus. We acknowledge our different understandings of Scripture and how these shape our lives, yet we choose to live as a community of love, welcoming into full participation people, of different race, income, sexual identity, family status, ability and other factors that may give rise to division and marginalization. In our diversity, we gather around the Table together to celebrate our unity in Christ.
